He actually got some of that right, but over-dramatized the crap out of it. Lots of very large meteors have hit the Earth but most of the biggest in its? earliest times. The biggest recent ones we know of would be Meteor Crater, Arizona and the Tunguska Blast in Siberia. The one that hit the Yucatan peninsula 65 million years ago made a crater about 100 km across. But he gives you a bunch of BS about new imminent collisions. They do still happen, but nothing big is expected soon.

The asteroid belt is very large and not dense at all, and from any one asteroid you would barely be able to see any others with your naked eyes. After about 10 million years of volcanism put enough CO2 back in the air with no new oxygen a runaway greenhouse effect melted the ice and led to the warm Cambrian Explosion.
